International Conference in Commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of The Classic and English Renaissance Literature Association of Korea, 19-20 May 2017 (Sogang University, Seoul, South Korea) Call for Papers Celebrating the 25th anniversary of its foundation, the Classic and English Renaissance Literature Association of Korea will hold an international conference on the topic of “the Classical Tradition in/and Renaissance English Literature“at Sogang University, Seoul, South Korea on 19-20 May 2017. You are cordially invited to join this one-and-a-half-day international conference in Seoul. Prof. Stephen Guy-Bray (University of British-Columbia, Canada) has confirmed to be the plenary speaker for the conference. It is needless to remind that the word “Renaissance” points to the revival of classical literature that motivated an urgent awareness of the ancient past, and thus triggered innovations in both ideas and the arts of the period. The Greco-Roman antiquity was received as a significant point of reference and departure during the Renaissance period in various cultural areas such as art, architecture, language, literature, politics, and thought. So the classical tradition has naturally been one of the primary focuses in Renaissance studies, from Gilbert Highet’s The Classical Tradition (1949), to Douglas Bush’s Classical Influences in Renaissance Literature (1952) to Robin Sowerby’s The Classical Legacy in Renaissance Poetry (1994). Even though some would say it is now an old-fashioned topic, there is no doubt that early modern writers, artists and intellectuals looked back to Greek and Roman figures, such as Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Ovid, Seneca and Boethius, for inspiration and guidance. And the recent development of reception studies, it seems, has successfully rejuvenated the academic interest in the presence of classical tradition in early modern England, as is evident with the latest publication of multi-volume The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature (2012~). In response to a growing interest in Classical reception in early modern English literature, we would like to make this one-and-a-half-day international conference an opportunity to revisit and rethink the complex relationships between the classical tradition and the early modern English literature. During this conference, we’d like to explore the significant cultural/literary changes that occurred in early modern England through new appropriations, interpretations, translations and rediscoveries of classical materials. The Classic and English Renaissance Literature Association of Korea was established in 1992 to foster Korean scholars’ vibrant research of the classical tradition in/and early modern English literature. The association has successfully been bringing together scholars in the fields of the Bible, Greek and Roman Mythology, Medieval Literature as well as Renaissance and Restoration literature. Having contributed to establishing the Classical and English Renaissance literary studies in Korea, the association aims to enhance professional development and improve academic practice by inviting papers from abroad under the conference topic of “The Classical Tradition in/and Renaissance English Literature.” The interested participants are cordially invited to the upcoming international conference.
